The best courses for learning AI coding agents like Claude Code and Codex

AI coding agents can write most of your code. Getting good code out of them is a skill. Here are the courses worth your time, from free to $1,295.

AI coding agents like Claude Code and Codex can now write most of the code in a typical feature. That doesn't make engineering easier. It moves the hard part. The work used to be typing out the solution. Now it's specifying the problem clearly, giving the agent the right context, and catching the mistakes it makes with total confidence.

That's a learnable skill, and the engineers who learn it first are pulling ahead fast. Here are the courses we think are worth your time, and how to pick between them.

What you actually need to learn

Most "learn AI coding" content is a list of prompts. Prompts aren't the skill. Watch engineers who get great results from agents and you'll see the same habits:

  1. They plan before they prompt. They write down what "done" looks like, often as a short design doc, before the agent touches the code.
  2. They feed context deliberately. They know what the agent can see, what it can't, and how to point it at the right files, conventions and examples.
  3. They make the codebase check the agent's work. Tests, type checks and linters catch mistakes automatically, so the human reviewer only has to judge the things that need judgement.
  4. They review like a senior engineer. They read every diff with suspicion and push back, instead of merging whatever comes back because it compiles.

A good course teaches all four. A weak one teaches only the first prompt.

The courses

Agentic Coding School: best structured workflow for working engineers

Run by engineer Ray Amjad, Agentic Coding School teaches you to direct AI coding agents with discipline. The main programme is a two-week Software Factory Engineer cohort with recorded lessons, live office hours and a private Discord.

What we like is the emphasis on not trusting agent output by default. That's the habit that separates engineers who get value from agents from the ones who create a mess they have to clean up later.

If you're not ready to commit, start with the free 7-day email course. It's a low-risk way to see whether the teaching style suits you.

AI Hero: Software Factories for Real Engineers: best for production codebases

This cohort is the most advanced option here. The idea is that agents only work well on real, messy codebases when you build a "software factory" around them: design docs, tests, linters, and both automated and human review. The course is built mainly around Claude Code.

It's two weeks long, but all 60+ video lessons are released on day one, so you can binge it or spread it out. There are live office hours and a Discord. At $1,295 it's a real investment, and it's priced for working engineers and teams, many of whom expense it. Early sign-ups and returning students get discounts.

Pick this if you're a mid-level or senior engineer, or if you're responsible for how a whole team adopts agents.

DeepLearning.AI: best free foundation

If you don't yet have a mental model of how LLMs and agents work, start here. DeepLearning.AI, founded by Andrew Ng, runs a big library of short courses, many made with the companies behind the tools. The videos are free to watch. A paid Pro membership adds hands-on labs, quizzes and certificates.

It won't teach you a day-to-day agentic coding workflow the way the two cohorts do. What it gives you is the understanding underneath: why agents fail the way they do, what context windows and tool use actually are, and how to build agent features into your own products.

How to choose

  • Your company will pay? Take one of the cohorts. The live office hours are where you get unstuck on your codebase, and that's where most of the value is.
  • Paying yourself and unsure? Do the free Agentic Coding School email course and a couple of DeepLearning.AI short courses first. You'll know within a week whether you want the deeper programme.
  • Leading a team? Go through AI Hero's course yourself first, then use it as the shared playbook for the team.

Whichever you choose, the fastest way to learn is to use agents on real work the same day. Pick one small, well-tested part of your codebase and practise there before you trust an agent with anything critical.
